Chine forest - Lansdowne

Unique and bespoke light Installations inspired by the eco-system and natural phenomena from local areas

In the heart of Lansdowne, Bournemouth's main business district, a new 'art' installation has recently been added to a planned public space, aimed to pique visitors' attention and draw them in. 

Permitted and approved by the BCP council, this project is a part of the multi-million pound “transformation” of the Lansdowne area. Work on the transformation was supported by earlier schemes' that started in early 2021, with the construction of new pavements and the protected cycle-lanes.

The columns will form a kind of forest of miniature sounds coming from multiple small speakers positioned at varying heights, that entice and engage visitors

Connecting nature with the public realm, the Chine Forest artwork acts as a beacon and attractor to Fire Station Square. Composed of 17 tactile columns, Chine Forest is inspired by the scented pine trees lining the chines and streets of Bournemouth and which lead to the sea, represented by the waves within the pavement. Intended to personify the networked digital age with respect to the environment around it, Chine Forest stores and transmits locally recorded sounds of nature, the environment and oral histories to create a unique visitor experience. Synchronised sound and lighting are combined to generate immersive scenes, which together with seating and perches, create a welcoming and accessible public space, while respecting and highlighting the dominance and heritage of the Grade 2 listed former Fire Station building.

 

Products used

17 Custom Chine Forest Artwork columns complete with integrated light, sound, benches and perches all linked to a connected DMX system that controls both the light and sound via time triggers. All units were individually tailored to the space with light and sound elements facing in different directions to create an immersive experience for the users of the space.
