LAGO Kortrijk Weide swimming pool

LED sports lighting solution designed to meet the technical requirements of indoor swimming pools

The LAGO swimming pool is located in the Weide district of Kortrijk. This large-scale redevelopment project on a former railway brownfield site has created a multi-purpose venue comprising sports facilities, businesses, event spaces, leisure facilities and an ecological park.

Since its opening in 2019, the aquatic centre has offered visitors a variety of amenities, including a 50-metre competition pool, indoor leisure pools with a wave pool, a rapid river, water slides, a children’s pool, heated outdoor pools and a wellness area.

Installing high-performance LED lighting was key to ensuring the safety, visual comfort and architectural enhancement in this sport and leisure facility.

The challenges of an aquatic environment

The lighting for indoor swimming pools must meet the demands of a highly challenging environment. The facility managers of LAGO swimming pool wanted a lighting solution that would:

  • ensure the safety of swimmers, staff and visitors;
  • comply with standards for both competition and leisure pools;
  • avoid the installation of luminaires directly above the pool;
  • withstand the demanding conditions of an aquatic environment (temperature and humidity);
  • combine lighting performance with aesthetics.

Our technical expertise and the quality of our luminaires enabled us to meet all of these requirements.

Meeting swimming pool lighting standards with photometric expertise

Swimming pool lighting must comply with EN 12193:2018. For competition pools, this standard specifies a general illuminance level of 500 lux and 600 lux for the starting blocks and turning points, with an average uniformity of 0.8.

The goal for the 25 x 50-metre pool was to provide high-performance, precise and perfectly uniform lighting across the entire surface, without placing any luminaires directly above the water. This was a key constraint, as any routine overhead maintenance would require the pool to be completely drained, resulting in significant logistical challenges and extended downtime.

Our design office carried out photometric studies to ensure very wide and deep light distributions. We proposed the OMNISTAR luminaire. By positioning these high-precision LED floodlights strictly along the sides of the hall, the entire pool surface is illuminated without a single fixture above the water.

This sports lighting solution offers strict compliance with standards, precision and perfect glare control. This ensures optimal visibility for lifeguards, without impairing their perception of underwater movement or causing visual fatigue for swimmers and staff.

A welcoming ambiance for the leisure pool

The requirements for the leisure pool were different. The lighting needed to comply with standards and provide a general illuminance level of 200 lux, while also blending in with the architectural design. The YOA LED luminaire was the obvious choice. With its circular, decorative design, it is particularly suited to the warm, playful atmosphere desired.

The YOA luminaire offers a modern and elegant aesthetic. The chosen light distribution provides uniform, soft lighting to create a welcoming, playful and distinctive atmosphere in the recreational area while meeting the required 200 lux level.

Furthermore, it is equipped with the LensoFlex® photometric engine to guarantee cutting-edge photometric performance over the long term.

LED luminaires suited to extreme environments

Beyond photometric and aesthetic considerations, the environment of an indoor swimming pool presents very high technical challenges, including:

  • ambient temperatures reaching around 35°C at ceiling level;
  • particularly high humidity levels;
  • the constant presence of chlorinated substances.

The selected luminaires therefore had to:

  • withstand high ambient heat throughout their entire service life;
  • avoid any risk of corrosion;
  • guarantee water tightness and maintain performance over time.

These characteristics are essential to ensure the durability of any aquatic lighting installation.

Our luminaires have been engineered to provide the longest possible service life. Every environmental factor, from water and heat to dust, has been carefully assessed and tested. Thanks to the high-quality materials used in their robust design, as well as their high ingress protection (IP) rating, our solutions are perfectly suited to swimming pool environments.

Aquatic complexes such as LAGO Kortrijk Weide, which cater to a diverse range of users, require lighting that can adapt to these varied needs. For this project, our team successfully combined technical expertise, aesthetic sensibility, and photometric know-how to overcome severe architectural constraints.

A tailored lighting study is essential to ensure performance and durability, whether for an indoor swimming pool lighting project, outdoor sports lighting or the refurbishment of a complex.
