Turf Moor Way

Contemporary urban lighting enhances safety and ambiance around Turf Moor for the local community and fans on match days

Football stadiums are often at the heart of their communities, creating vibrant spaces where people want to live and connect. Turf Moor, the iconic home of Burnley Football Club, is no exception. Recognising its importance, the approach to Turf Moor, officially known as Harry Potts Way, underwent a transformative upgrade as part of the ‘Town 2 Turf’ Levelling Up scheme. This ambitious initiative aimed to enhance pedestrian links between the stadium and Burnley town centre, fostering better connectivity and an improved urban experience.

To achieve a modern, welcoming aesthetic for the area, Lancashire County Council and Burnley Borough Council commissioned Schréder, a long-standing supplier, to deliver a bespoke contemporary lighting solution.

A refined and modern approach to urban design

The contemporary design for Turf Moor Way is centred around stylish FLEXIA FG luminaires on LUTECIA brackets, both finished in a modern dark colour. Together, the ensembles give Harry Potts Way an elegant and contemporary feel. In addition, illuminated tapered banner arms have been incorporated into the columns, providing both enhanced aesthetics and the opportunity to promote local events, enriching the community atmosphere.

Innovative lighting poles for a smarter future

At the entrance to Turf Moor, SHUFFLE smart poles with 360° lighting modules have been strategically installed to guide fans safely and create a dynamic, contemporary ambiance. These modular poles have a dark finish to blend seamlessly with the stadium's vertical lines. In addition, their design allows for future upgrades such as the addition of CCTV, SOS intercoms, audio systems and more, providing a scalable solution that adapts to evolving needs.

The installation complements the digitalisation of the Turf Moor entrance and symbolises Burnley FC's commitment to innovation and progress.

Safer streets and seamless integration

AXIA EVO street lights were chosen to light pedestrian crossings and a seating area with striking murals, creating a safe and welcoming space for fans and visitors. Closer to Burnley town centre, AXIA 3 lanterns were installed to light a busy junction, which has been redesigned to improve safety. These lanterns have become a standard throughout Lancashire County Council's street lighting network due to their outstanding performance, robust construction and ease of installation.

Meanwhile, OMNISTAR luminaires continue to provide the required lighting levels for Burnley town centre. Installed nearly a decade ago, these reliable fixtures continue to deliver exceptional performance, underlining the long-term value of quality lighting solutions from Schréder.

FutureProof lighting for tomorrow's needs

Every luminaire installed on this project has been futureproofed to allow seamless integration with a control management system, should the council decide to implement one in the future. This forward-thinking approach ensures that Burnley's lighting infrastructure remains adaptable to new technologies.

Making a lasting impact on the community

Reflecting on the success of the project, Andrew Chapel, Operations Manager at Lancashire County Council, said:

Personally, I think it has enhanced the area (the whole scheme) and is a real improvement

By combining contemporary aesthetics with innovative intelligent lighting solutions, the transformation of Turf Moor Way not only enhances the matchday experience, but also reinforces Burnley FC's position as a forward-thinking club deeply rooted in the local community.
